Overhead Bench Press
Which is better the bench or the overhead press.
Overhead bench press. A strong overhead press can help your bench press. Performance of other exercises like the bench press similar moves to the overhead press performing the same exercise repeatedly can lead to boredom overuse and a decrease in performance and gains. The bench press and the overhead press are the two m ajor pushing lifts.
On the other hand when you are lifting the barbell overhead the chest does not contribute largely to the lift. T he bench press builds more upper body mass because it involves more muscle s chest shoulders and triceps. Seated presses don t require the same stability because the body is taking stability from the bench.
In an overhead press there s less counterstrain on the joints because all muscles surrounding the shoulders are involved. But to the contrary your bench press strength will have much less of an effect on your overhead press. If you get strong on the overhead press your bench press will go up.
Powerlifting uses the bench press instead of the overhead press as the test of upper body strength while bodybuilding is focused on aesthetics. Throw in the emergence of weight machines in the 70 s and the press s dwindling in mainstream popularity isn t a surprise. The overhead press builds your bench automatically there is a strong correlation between vertical and horizontal pressing strength.
