There are many minor faults that can be responsible for shoulder pain during bench press.

Pain in shoulder when benching. And to fix this there s two things you need to do. These tiny muscles that make up the rotator cuff are an area of considerable focus when it comes to preventing shoulder pain and or injury. The other source of concern is the muscles of the scapula or rather the ones that help stabilize it.

However the rotator cuff is only part of the reason you may be feeling shoulder pain when benching. Specifically a deep achy pain experienced in the front of the shoulder. A nagging pain that occurs when you lower the bar to your chest a pain that you need to push through in order to raise the bar back to the start position.

While bench pressing you may experience some rotator or shoulder pain during part of the movement. If pain is felt in your shoulder the test is considered positive. Fortunately a few simple exercises can help you resolve this issue and recover faster.

The 1 reason that athletes avoid or dislike the bench press exercise is shoulder pain. The space where your rotator cuff tendons and shoulder bursa reside the sub acromial space becomes smaller when your arm is raised overhead and pushed to the limit. When these muscles contract they pull on the rotator cuff tendon causing the shoulder to rotate.

This is likely due to weak muscles in this area. It can be either one shoulder or both and it seems to come out of nowhere. The bench press and shoulder press are the two exercises most likely to cause.

As mentioned in the last paragraph bench pressing is performed with the shoulder blades locked in retraction. This creates unnecessary torque on both the elbow and the shoulder joint likely contributing to your shoulder pain when benching. The second is poor scapular stabilization.
